Beavers in Wales

The possibility of beavers seen in Wales again could be possible next year, since 2005 six Welsh Wildlife Trusts created the Welsh Beaver Project and since that time they have been investigating the possibility of making an introduction happen. Local consultation is currently underway and the most likely location for such an introduction is at river Rheidol Around 30-40 young beavers will be released during the spring/summer months of 2014 if everything up to that point is successful.

Beavers have many benefits to natural wildlife and were once native to Wales before being hunted to extinction by humans, they manage wetlands and rivers and create ecosystems that benefits wildlife. they also promote healthy rives, reducing bank erosion and improving them for passing fish. The benefits outway the negatives and a reintroduction could be on its way early next year.
