Step 1
The first thing you will need to is gather your equipment, the equipment checklist is as follows:
- An old tin can (for mine I used one which contained baked beans)
- A pair of secateurs or a hacksaw
- Some bamboo canes
- Paint (spray paint works best)
Step 2
Cover the tin with the paint, the paint is used to prevent the tin from rusting over the years and extending the life of the solitary bee box.
Step 3
While waiting for the paint to dry start cutting up the bamboo, you will want lengths approximately the same as the tin can but the sizes can be varied. When cutting be careful to not split the bamboo so it is best to take your time, after all, you are waiting for paint to dry.
Step 4
With all your bamboo cut and the paint dry you can now start putting the bamboo inside the can. Do this when you cannot fit anymore in, and for the last one you might want to hammer it in as this prevents any from falling out and no need for any glue.
Hint* Do not forget to wash your hands before handling bamboo, unlike me |
Step 5
Now place your solitary bee box somewhere where it gets shade, sun and is sheltered from strong winds, such as wedged between a garden shed and wall. Try to place it along eye level and on a slight angle with the bamboo ends slightly pointing downwards.
