Hello all!
I know its been a long time since my last post here, but I'm pleased to announce that I'm back, and will hopefully keep you up to date with the birds of the east of England!!
You may or may not have seen on Autumnwatch last Thursday (28/10/10) that Waxwings have been arriving in hundreds to feed from our winter berry bushes, especially laurel trees and bushes.
There could be numerous reasons for this mass arrival, but most likely the berries in their native Scandanavia have failed, so the birds came looking for food early this time around!
The arrival numbers are denser in the north east of Scotland & England, but now some have filtered south/ south east, 50 of which were found in Great Yarmouth.
The birds showed well against a bright, sunny sky. Flying from tree to tv aerial, to tree again and back again the birds seemed very comfortable and should stay for a while until the berries run out!!
Sounding a bit like a sped up greenfinch they call and preen often, and with a hair-do like that they need to!!
So here's a picture to remind you of these beautiful winter visitors. Do take the chance to see some if you can!
